Hawley Street Encampment Cleared After Knights Inn Fire Protest

The temporary housing protest encampment outside the Broome County Office Building at 60 Hawley Street has been cleared after standing for nine days in downtown Binghamton.

The encampment formed after the deadly June 22 fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell, where six people died. The motel had been used for emergency housing, and the tragedy quickly became a flashpoint for broader questions about homelessness, motel placements, public oversight, and the safety of vulnerable families across Broome County.

Binghamton Police and the Department of Public Works carried out the clearing after a notice period expired. City officials said tents, tables, and other gear were removed peacefully, and no arrests were made.
